The genius of Astor Piazzolla tangos revisited by his gran-son in a powerful jazz version

Daniel “Pipi” Piazolla funded Escalandrum in 1999. This name resulted as a combination between the word “escalandrún” (a kind of shark that “Pipi” usually fishes with his father –as a family tradition initiated by his grandfather, Astor), and the english word drum.

In 1999, Escalandrum releases his first album, called "Bar Los Amigos" (Friend’s bar), witch gave them great critics from the local press and had a strong influence of latin jazz.

Their second album, "Estados Alterados" (Altered States) was successfully presented at ND/Ateneo theatre, in Buenos Aires. At that time, Escalandrum was given the award as Revelation group by the main music award of the country. Nevertheless, the group continued searching for a more acoustic and personal sound.

In 2004, the band launched their third album, "Sexteto en movimiento" (Sextet in movement); they were no longer a revelation group but one of the best argentinean jazz bands. In spite of that, Escalandrum started to combine urban and folkloric rhythms with well known jazz’s characteristics.

In that year, The Konex Foundation ranked the group as one of the 100 most distinguished musicians of argentinean popular music of decade. The fourth album, "Misterioso (Mysterious)", was solid and had a modern sound these characteristics gave them the opportunity to play in the most eclectic festivals not only in Argentina but also around the world.

In 2007, Escalandrum represented Argentina at the Music’s Market of VIC, Barcelona. In june 2008, the sextet released "Visiones" (Visions), an album that showed maturity and originality in its composition and interpretation. That is why it was considered inescapable for argentinean new jazz.

After twelve years of career, the group has played around argentinean’s most important stages, transcending its nature and taking their music to over twenty countries around the world. In 2011, the remarkable "Piazzolla play Piazzolla" was released. This is a unique piece that merges fluently both jazz and tango. It means a tribute to the great Astor, in its ninetieth anniversary.

The officially presentation of Piazzolla plays Piazzolla in Buenos Aires was at Theatre Gran Rex, with special participation of Paquito D'Rivera and Susana Rinaldi, receiving extensive coverage of the public and the press and a Latin Grammy Awards nomination in the category Best Instrumental Album. After this, continues to develop numerous tours in different countries and shape the finished material, and composed entirely, resulting in the seventh studio album to be released in early 2012.
